The President's Cake

While people across 1990s Iraq struggle to survive the war and food shortages, the President requires each school in the country to prepare a cake to celebrate his birthday. Despite her efforts to avoid getting picked, 9-year-old Lamia (Nayyef) is chosen among her classmates. The young girl must now use her wits and imagination to gather ingredients and prepare the mandatory cake in The President’s Cake. The President’s Cake was winner of the Golden Camera and the Director’s Fortnight Audience Award at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival.

Dans les années 1990, alors que la population de l’Iraq de Saddam Hussein fait de son mieux pour survivre à la guerre et à la pénurie de nourriture, le président demande que chaque école du pays prépare un gâteau pour célébrer son anniversaire. Lamia, une fillette de neuf ans imaginative et débrouillarde, est choisie pour confectionner ledit gâteau. Sa quête d’ingrédients, accompagnée de son ami Saeed, bouleverse son quotidien. The President’s Cake a mérité la Caméra d’or au Festival de Cannes il y a quelques mois.
