After losing his job as a paralegal, Sam Stein (Shear) suffers a panic attack and stumbles into a job babysitting his psychiatrist’s three granddaughters. The girls’ mother, Dianne (Peet), is an actor whose once-promising career has stalled. When her rock bassist husband David (Nivola) goes abroad on tour, Dianne and Sam discover an easy rapport as well as a shared history of mental illness. Sam joins Dianne’s family to babysit for the summer on Martha’s Vineyard, and he ends up in a house with the woman he pines for, her husband, the three kids, and all four grandparents, including his psychiatrist (Hirsch). Fantasy Life won the Special Jury Award at the SXSW Film Festival for Amanda Peet’s performance.

Après avoir perdu son emploi de technicien juridique, Sam Stein a une crise de panique et se retrouve à garder les trois petites-filles de son psychiatre. La mère de celles-ci, Dianne, est une actrice dont la carrière autrefois prometteuse a stagné. Pendant que son époux David, un bassiste de rock, est parti en tournée, elle et Sam établissent un bon contact et échangent sur leurs antécédents de maladie mentale. Sam se joint à la famille de Dianne pour garder les enfants pendant l’été à Martha’s Vineyard. Le voilà donc avec la femme qu’il désire, son mari, leurs trois filles et les quatre grands-parents, dont son psychiatre. Fantasy Life a mérité le prix spécial du jury au SXSW Film Festival pour la prestation d’Amanda Peet dans le rôle de Dianne.
