Richelieu

To keep her finances from sinking lower and to try to get her life back on track after a bad breakup, Ariane (Castellanos) moves back to her hometown to live with her mother and takes a job working as a French-to-Spanish translator in a factory that employs temporary laborers from Guatemala. When Ariane befriends Manuel (Coronado), an illiterate and naïve young man who has left his small children behind in Guatemala to earn as much as he can in Canada, she begins to witness the migrant workers being taken advantage of and abused in the workplace. Amongst mounting pressure to do what she feels is right, Ariane must decide how far she is willing to go to speak out against the director of the company and put an end to the regular injustice forced upon the workers on a day-to-day basis. With every small action and choice made, the curtain is peeled back to reveal everyone’s true character.

Afin d’améliorer sa situation financière précaire et de reprendre sa vie en main après une rupture difficile, Ariane retourne dans sa ville natale pour vivre avec sa mère. Elle devient interprète français-espagnol pour une usine de transformation alimentaire embauchant des ouvriers saisonniers guatémaltèques, un employeur austère et insensible. Elle se lie d’amitié avec Manuel, un jeune homme naïf et illettré qui a laissé son enfant au Guatemala pour venir faire autant d’argent que possible au Canada. Elle prend de plus en plus conscience de l’exploitation éhontée dont sont victimes ces travailleurs migrants et entreprend une résistance quotidienne pour les défendre. Ariane devra éventuellement faire face aux limites qu’elle est prête à franchir au nom de la justice. Richelieu, un drame social cinglant sur le sort réservé aux travailleurs agricoles venus d’Amérique latine pour pallier la pénurie de main-d’œuvre, est le premier long métrage réalisé par Pier-Phillippe Chevigny.
